Introduction

Today many organizations and engineers maintain electronic portfolios allowing them to collaborate and document with great efficiency.  A powerful tool for the EDD classroom is the Innovation Portal.  The Innovation Portal is a free web based service that is connected directly to the Engineering Design Process Portfolio Scoring Rubric (EDPPSR).

...students to create, maintain and share digital portfolios. The portfolios can be used to meet a class requirement or they can be used to submit the portfolio to a scholarship or open contest. The contest owners - or anyone else invited by the student - can evaluate a student’s portfolio.

Tens of thousands of high school and post-secondary students complete original engineering design and problem solving projects each year. The vast majority of these students simply close their project portfolios and move on when the course is finished as opportunities to seek recognition for their work beyond the classroom are few and varied. Students who participate in original engineering design and problem solving work are highly valued by post-secondary and industry representatives yet there is no standardized format or vehicle for interested parties to use to view and evaluate these student works.

It is strongly recommended that teachers and students use the Innovation Portal to track and document progress throughout the design process.

  • Your Engineering Notebook will protect your intellectual property should you develop a unique solution to a problem.
  • Maintaining a PowerPoint presentation will have you prepared to present updates to your instructor/peers and be ready for your final presentation.
  • The Innovation Portal will provide you with a number of opportunities beyond EDD should you choose to pursue them by allowing you to share your work securely and electronically.
