Task-Oriented Roles
- Initiator: Inspires the group to begin work, offers new ideas, makes suggestions for tackling the problem, and reminds others to stay on task.
- Elaborator: Clarifies important information, criteria, and constraints; shares previous knowledge or personal experiences; points out important issues with process; supports team members’ opinions with facts.
- Evaluator: Provides guidance to group for assessment of the quality of its solution, tests hypotheses and assumptions to determine their effectiveness, considers and shares potential consequences of suggestions and possible solution paths, considers and shares how the solution will be viewed by outside parties.
- Coordinator: Pulls together the contributions of other team members, combines solutions or activities, and coordinates the order of activities.
- Fact Seeker: Consistently asks for information from others, asks for justification of ideas and opinions.
- Summarizer: Restates other‘s ideas, consolidates the ideas of other members, offers a conclusion based on various information.
- Timekeeper: Monitors time and reminds group of time constraint so that they complete the task in the available time, keeps area clean.
Process-Oriented Roles
- Encourager: Encourages all team members to contribute, supports team members’ ideas, and builds a cohesive environment.
- Consensus Builder: Helps members work together, appreciates different viewpoints, points out similarities in ideas and encourages consensus, minimizes differences and reduces tension with humor or encouragement.
- Equalizer: Ensures that all members contribute ideas and opinions. Neutralizes dominant behavior from other group members and insists that quiet team members be heard.
Destructive Roles
- Dominator: Overpowers others when speaking, continually seeks to direct all activity, insists on doing it their way, and gives others little opportunity to contribute.
- Blocker: Introduces roadblocks to solutions suggested by others, criticizes ideas without helpful suggestions, negative attitude.
- Recognition Seeker: Reminds team members or others of “their” ideas, speaks as if they are the most important member of the group, and claims responsibility for the team effort.
- Avoider: Voluntarily contributes little or nothing to the group, tries to distract other team members, avoids responsibility and complains about assigned tasks.
