Introduction

Multiple Solutions: A best practice in engineering design is to create multiple solutions to the problem, analyze the solution concepts, and select the best concept to develop. Often the solution may contain feature from two solution concepts combined. Students have seen this process in “The Deep Dive” (Introduction to Engineering Design). You might want to show this video again in order to kick start the design phase of this process.

Data Driven Decisions – Selection Matrices: In Component 1 all decisions were research driven. In the design phase, we will also use tools like a decision matrix to help with prioritizing design goals and selecting a final solution concept to move forward with development.  In research, APA citation gave the majority of group’s choices validity. In design, student can point to the decision matrix for justification of their choices.
